I did not grow up in a cat-owning household. My mom's allergic to cats, so it was never really in the cards for me to have even one of those hairless guys. As a result, I'm a bit inept regarding meeting, petting, and generally socializing with my friend's cats. I don't always know the right and wrong ways to pet them because they have different sensitive areas than dogs. I usually give them head scratches, which seems to satisfy them enough. Cats are different than dogs in that they don't typically beg for attention. When I'm hanging out with a cat, it's far more difficult to pick up on whether they want me to pay attention to them or not. They play hard to get, and I have to respect their dignified disposition compared to the desperate nature of the canine.
